Border crossings quadrupled when Biden became president

A former Obama administration official acknowledged during MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Thursday that border encounters increased substantially following President Trump’s departure from office.
During the segment, Steven Rattner, who served as counselor to the treasury secretary under President Obama, presented a detailed graph displaying monthly border encounters during both the Trump and Biden administrations. The visualization segregated the data by nationality, encompassing individuals from Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, and other nations.
John Fetterman said something we ALL CAN AGREE WITH…AGAIN!!!!
“If you look at the numbers, it's almost 270,000 encounters and that's a lot. It's not xenophobic to have a conversation about border security." pic.twitter.com/Z8wheMXxHk

“The border was not Biden’s finest moment, frankly. You can see what happened here,” Rattner said, pointing to a line on the graph that divided Trump’s administration from Biden’s, which indicated a severe increase in encounters.
“Trump is not wrong when he talks about how border crossings were quite low. They were running about 74,000 a month when he left office,” he continued. “And they, in fact, did shoot up. Some of it was some things Biden said and some ways that they put a moratorium, for example, on deportations.”
The data revealed that encounters peaked at 300,000 monthly under Biden’s leadership.
While Rattner suggested that border crossings have nearly returned to Trump-era levels, hovering around 100,000 monthly, his analysis failed to account for several key factors. The Biden administration has implemented various alternative entry methods, including the CHNV program, which allows numerous foreign nationals to enter via air travel, circumventing border crossing statistics.
The administration has also introduced the CBP One app for asylum appointment scheduling and expanded Temporary Protected Status to nationals from multiple countries, including Venezuela, Nicaragua, Haiti, and El Salvador. These entries aren’t reflected in traditional border encounter numbers.

Moreover, the northern border with Canada has witnessed a notable surge in encounters during Biden’s tenure, and official statistics don’t include individuals who successfully evaded detection.
Despite these complexities, November saw southern border crossings reach their lowest point in four years, according to CBP data.
“Our enhanced enforcement efforts, combined with executive actions and coordination with Mexico and Central American countries in recent months, are having a sustained, meaningful impact,” stated Troy A. Miller, CBP’s acting commissioner.
