Healey chooses state unity over anti-Trump coalition

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has opted not to participate in a newly formed Democratic governors’ coalition aimed at opposing President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming administration.

According to The Boston Globe’s Thursday report, Healey, despite her previous confrontations with Trump during her political ascent, has chosen to remain separate from the initiative known as Governors Safeguarding Democracy.

This coalition, launched by Democratic governors JB Pritzker of Illinois and Jared Polis of Colorado, presents itself as a bipartisan effort to unite gubernatorial offices in protecting democratic institutions at the state level.

The initiative maintains connections with the Governors Action Alliance, an organization featuring prominent Massachusetts figures on its advisory board, including former Democratic governor Deval Patrick and former Republican governor William Weld.

Pritzker, who built his fortune through the Hyatt hotel chain, describes the expected funding for the group as “philanthropic.” While questions remain about whether California Governor Gavin Newsom, often called the “leader of the resistance,” will join, Healey maintains that current governmental structures, particularly state attorneys general offices, already serve to protect states’ rights.

Healey emphasizes her commitment to representing her entire constituency, including the 37% who supported Trump, rather than joining the resistance movement.
