How Has the Immunity Ruling Impacted the Biden-Trump 2024 Debate?

IMMUNITY RULING Impacts Biden

In the hours after the Supreme Court’s momentous decision, former President Trump frequently applauded the court’s widely expected rule that past presidents enjoy broad protection for their official activities while in the White House.

“BRILLIANTLY WRITTEN AND WISE,” Trump tweeted in a social media post about the decision, which probably dealt a serious blow to the current investigation into allegations that he attempted to influence President Biden’s defeat in the 2020 race.

“THE SUPREME COURT DECISION IS A MUCH MORE POWERFUL ONE THAN SOME HAD EXPECTED IT TO BE,” Trump said.

Following the conservative-dominated court’s decision on Monday, which included three justices Trump nominated, the trial judge in the lower court case against Trump will now have to hold hearings to determine whether the charges against him were based on official or unofficial actions by the then-president.

It’s very improbable that Trump would face trial for attempting to rig the 2020 election before voters cast votes in the 2024 rematch between the outgoing president and his Democratic successor; that process will take years.

In an exclusive interview, Trump referred to it as a “huge win for our Constitution and for democracy” with Fox News’s Brooke Singman.

However, in a conference call with reporters, Biden’s main deputy campaign manager, Quentin Fulks, said that “this decision will give Donald Trump cover to do exactly what he’s been saying he wants to do for months, which is enact revenge and retribution against his political enemies.”

“This is a crucial time for our nation. Fulks said that Trump’s appointment of three conservative justices to the court “just made it easier for him to pursue a path to a dictatorship.”

A little over four months before the November election, a key concern moving forward is how the Supreme Court’s decision regarding presidential immunity would affect the Biden-Trump rematch.

The president’s main platform in his bid for a second term in office is his long-standing accusation that Trump poses a danger to democracy.

And Biden emphasized this argument in a speech on Monday night.

“If Trump’s acceptance of violence to maintain his power is acceptable, that decision must be made by the American people. Most importantly, the American people need to determine whether or not to give Donald Trump the president once again. Knowing this, the president underlined, “he’ll be even more emboldened to do whatever he pleases, whenever he wants to do it.”
