Widespread Disapproval of Macron’s Presidency
A Le Figaro poll reveals that a substantial 82% of French citizens now categorize President Macron’s leadership as unsuccessful. Even among those who previously backed him in 2017 and 2022, 63% now align with this critical perspective. The survey, commissioned by Le Figaro and executed by Odoxa, underscores a significant shift in public opinion against the centrist leader, heightening skepticism about his political influence post-2027.
This increasing discontent is further compounded by expectations that Macronism, his centrist philosophy, may not extend beyond his term’s conclusion in 2027. A stark 59% of his Renaissance supporters even suggest that this movement might soon vanish. Céline Bracq from Odoxa concurs, stating, “In light of these results, the conclusion is clear, For the French, Macronism has not established itself as a lasting project, nor as a structuring political movement.”
Criticism from Key Demographics
Macron’s presidency faces heightened criticism from diverse demographic groups, notably women, lower-income brackets, and voters aged 50 to 64. This dissatisfaction is attributed partly to the perceived failure of Macron’s policies to address fundamental socio-economic issues and governmental challenges.
Sophie Primas from the Republican party underscores the vulnerabilities in Macronism, citing its absence of a strong ideological foundation and highlighting the persistent issues of a coalition government lacking an absolute majority. “Macronism will probably come to an end in the coming months, with the end of president Macron’s second five-year term,” Primas remarks.
Personal Controversy and Future Prospects
Amid growing public dissatisfaction, Macron’s image suffers due to a personal incident involving his wife, Brigitte. Reports of her reportedly slapping him during a state visit to Vietnam have been a topic of conversation, despite Macron’s attempts to deny and downplay the event. Such controversies further complicate an already challenging political landscape.
The political future in France remains uncertain with a perceived rise in support for the Right over the Left, marked by an increase to 32% for right-leaning affiliations. As Macron nears the end of his second term, the possibility of successors like Gabriel Attal gains attention, though consensus remains elusive as Attal holds only 45% support.
