Russian President Vladimir Putin has communicated with U.S. President Donald Trump regarding a proposed ceasefire in Ukraine through Trump’s special envoy, with the Kremlin expressing measured optimism about the development.

During late-night discussions in Moscow, Putin met with Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff to evaluate the American proposal for a month-long ceasefire with Ukraine. According to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, Ukraine has already shown support for this initiative.

Speaking to reporters, Peskov revealed that Putin transmitted messages to Trump through Witkoff, while also receiving updates about the American perspective on the Ukrainian situation.

Peskov elaborated on the exchange, stating, “There are certainly reasons to be cautiously optimistic. You heard a very important statement yesterday from President Putin, who was answering a journalist’s question. He said that he supports President Trump’s position in terms of a settlement, but he voiced some questions that need to be answered together.”

“So, yes, indeed, there is still a lot to be done, but nevertheless, the president expressed solidarity with Mr. Trump’s position,” he added.

The scheduling of a direct phone conversation between the two presidents will be determined after Witkoff briefs Trump on his Moscow meeting, according to Peskov.
