Secretary of State Marco Rubio dismissed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s suggestion of nuclear weapons for Ukraine as an alternative to NATO membership, calling it an unrealistic proposition during peace negotiations with Russia.
During an extensive interview at the State Department in Washington, DC, Rubio expressed his firm stance against nuclear proliferation. “Well, I don’t think anyone would think that’s a serious offer on their part, nor do I think equipping them with nuclear weapons is a solution to the problem,” Rubio told Breitbart News when asked about Zelensky’s recent statements.
The discussion of nuclear weapons arose after Zelensky’s recent interview with Piers Morgan, where he stated through an interpreter, “Give us back nuclear arms.” Ukraine had previously possessed nuclear weapons following the Soviet Union’s collapse but relinquished them in 1994 in exchange for security guarantees from Russia, the United States, and Britain.

Addressing the broader peace process, Rubio outlined a three-step approach to improving U.S.-Russia relations. The initial focus would be on restoring embassy operations, followed by peace negotiations, and finally exploring potential areas of cooperation. He also addressed the issue of Putin’s seizure of western companies, including the American-owned Glavproduct, indicating it would be part of future discussions.
Rubio defended the Trump administration’s peace initiatives against critics, pointing out what he viewed as hypocrisy in their stance. He drew parallels between those calling for continued conflict in Ukraine and their contrasting position on Israel’s response to the October 7 Hamas attack.
The Secretary emphasized the necessity of compromise in peace negotiations, stating that successful conflict resolution requires concessions from all parties involved. He remained confident in the administration’s approach, dismissing criticism as politically motivated opposition to President Trump’s initiatives.

“First of all, I think it’s hypocritical. These are the same people, by the way, that were arguing after October 7 when these savages went in and did what they did in Israel that somehow Israel shouldn’t do anything about it,” Rubio said. “These are the same people who were demanding a ceasefire and ending hostilities and allowing Hamas to survive, and on the other hand, they’re arguing, ‘let the war in Ukraine go on. Let it go on for a couple more years. Let us continue to subsidize it with billions of dollars and thousands of lives being destroyed. Let the country be destroyed.'”
