Biden and Harris Push for Supreme Court Term Limits, Conduct Codes, and Presidential Immunity Restrictions
Biden, Harris URGE Supreme Court REFORMS
According to a White House official, President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are urging Congress to create restrictions on presidential immunity as well as term limits and a code of behavior for the Supreme Court.
According to the official, Biden will talk about the suggested changes when he speaks on Monday at the LBJ Presidential Library in honor of the Civil Rights Act’s 60th anniversary. In an opinion piece that was released on Monday morning, Biden again talked about his desire for Supreme Court reform.
“During my 36 years as a U.S. senator, I held the positions of ranking member and chairman of the Judiciary Committee.” In the Washington Post op-ed, Biden stated, “As a senator, vice president, and president, I have overseen more Supreme Court nominations than anyone living today.”
“I hold our institutions and the division of powers in the highest regard. What is taking place right now is abnormal, and it erodes public trust in the court’s rulings—especially those that affect individual liberties. Now, there is a gap between us,” Biden wrote.
Any immunity a former president may have for crimes committed while in office would be removed under Biden’s changes.
Presidential candidate Harris supported the effort. “Today, there is a clear crisis of confidence facing the Supreme Court as its fairness has been called into question after numerous ethics scandals and decision after decision overturning long-standing precedent,” she stated.
Biden wants to set an 18-year term restriction for judges on the Supreme Court and justices. After it is officially ratified, presidents will be able to select new justices every two years.
According to Biden, the justices should be obliged under the new code of conduct for the Supreme Court to “disclose gifts, refrain from public political activity, and recuse themselves from cases in which they or their spouses have financial or other conflicts of interest.”
“President Biden and Vice President Harris look forward to working with Congress and empowering the American people to prevent the abuse of Presidential power, restore faith in the Supreme Court, and strengthen the guardrails of democracy,” the official at the White House stated.
