Another Foreign Leader Tells America How to Handle Its Border
Just when you thought foreign interference in American affairs couldn’t get more brazen, Colombia’s leftist president Gustavo Petro has decided that the new Pope should become a political activist for illegal immigration into the United States. In what can only be described as a shameless attempt to weaponize religious leadership, Petro has publicly called on Pope Leo XIV to champion migrants who he claims are being “humiliated” in America – completely ignoring the fact that these individuals broke U.S. law by entering illegally.
“I hope he becomes a great leader for migrant peoples around the world, and I hope he encourages our Latin American migrant brothers and sisters, humiliated today in the United States. It’s time for them to organize” – President Gustavo Petro.
Let’s be crystal clear about what’s happening here. This isn’t simply a call for compassion – it’s a foreign leader explicitly encouraging a religious figure to interfere in American domestic affairs by mobilizing non-citizens against our nation’s immigration laws. Petro’s statement about migrants needing to “organize” is nothing short of a call for political activism against American sovereignty. Imagine the outrage if an American president encouraged religious leaders to mobilize groups within Colombia to undermine their governmental policies.
The Vatican Becomes a Political Prize
Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Prevost in Chicago, does indeed have strong connections to Latin America, having served as a missionary in Peru for many years and holding dual US-Peruvian citizenship. But rather than respecting the spiritual nature of his new role, Latin American leaders are racing to claim him as a political ally for their agendas. It’s a naked attempt to transform the Vatican from a religious institution into a political weapon aimed at American immigration policy.
“The new Pope, Leo XIV, is more than just an American. His immediate ancestors are Latin—Spanish and French—and he lived 40 years in our Latin America, in Peru. I hope he becomes a great leader for migrants around the world, and I hope that he lifts up our Latino migrant brothers and sisters who are currently being humiliated by the US.” – Gustavo Petro.
Notice how quickly Petro dismisses Leo’s American identity, emphasizing instead his “Latin ancestors” and time spent in Peru. It’s almost as if he’s saying, “Don’t worry, he may have been born in America, but he’s really one of us.” This transparent attempt to claim ownership of the Pope’s loyalties reveals the political motivations behind these statements. The Left never wastes an opportunity to politicize religion when it serves their agenda, despite their usual demands for separation of church and state.
The Broader Agenda Revealed
Peruvian President Dina Boluarte and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva have joined this chorus, with the latter specifically hoping the new Pope will continue Francis’s focus on “social justice” and “environmental defense” – progressive code words that have little to do with spiritual guidance. What happened to the Pope’s primary mission of saving souls? Apparently, modern leftist leaders prefer a Pope who functions as an international NGO director pushing globalist policies rather than spiritual leadership.
“I hope he will continue the legacy of Pope Francis, whose main virtues were the relentless pursuit of peace and social justice, the defense of the environment, dialogue with all peoples and all religions, and respect for the diversity of human beings. We do not need wars, hatred, and intolerance. We need more solidarity and more humanism. May Pope Leo XIV bless us and inspire us in the ongoing quest to build a better and more just world.” – Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
The irony is overwhelming. These same leaders who demand the Pope intervene in American immigration policy would likely be outraged if the Vatican took strong positions against abortion, gender ideology, or other progressive sacred cows. Their selective calls for papal intervention expose the cynical political calculation behind their statements. Meanwhile, American citizens continue to bear the financial, social, and security costs of an open border that these foreign leaders insist must remain uncontrolled – from a comfortable distance, of course.
