Harris remains Democrat star due to lack of options

Fox News contributor Tammy Bruce delivered a candid assessment of Vice President Kamala Harris’s political future, suggesting that her continued prominence stems primarily from a limited pool of Democratic leadership alternatives.

Harris, who stepped in as the Democratic nominee after President Biden’s unexpected withdrawal from the 2024 race, ultimately fell short in her presidential bid against Donald Trump. According to Bruce, Harris’s elevation to such a prominent position reflects more on the party’s limited options than her individual qualifications.

“Some people are professional candidates. Now, she has won office, right? I mean, she has done well, inexplicably. She did — it continues to concern me that she received as many votes as she did, but that is something that the legacy media contributes to, and party loyalty contributes to, but all Americans across the board are waking up,” Bruce told “Varney and Company” guest host Ashley Webster. “But this is a woman who, because of the weakness of the Democratic bench, she becomes a star. And if the Democratic bench expands, if Democrats vote people in who know what they’re doing and can explain a vision, then the value of someone like Kamala Harris or the appeal of her will wane.”

Bruce elaborated on Harris’s future prospects, noting that while a California gubernatorial run might be possible, career politicians at her level often struggle to envision alternative paths. “But, you know, in California you can — I suppose she might have a shot at something, if she wants to run for governor, but she’s not going to go and do something new,” Bruce continued. “Many people forget to think about that, you know, maybe you should try something else. There are other things in life. But, you know, for politicians at her level, there’s really nothing else in their minds that they can do, so it’s going to be up to the Democrats. But if they had a bigger bench and a stronger bench, she would not, I think, be in the position she’s in.”

Despite her electoral defeat, polling data from 538.com shows Harris leading potential Democratic contenders for 2028, including Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and California Governor Gavin Newsom.

The final months of Harris’s campaign alongside running mate Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota were marked by limited media engagement until October, when they ramped up their public appearances. This restricted media strategy may have contributed to Walz’s underwhelming performance in the October vice-presidential debate.

Harris’s campaign decisions included skipping the Al Smith Dinner in favor of a video collaboration with former SNL performer Molly Shannon, and notably declining a Joe Rogan podcast appearance, reportedly due to staff concerns about potential backlash. These choices appeared to impact her electoral performance negatively.
