  • Bishop Martin of Charlotte proposed bans on several traditional liturgical practices.
  • The diocese claims the directive is still a draft undergoing changes.
  • Critics believe these changes undermine reverence and solemnity.
  • Restrictions align with Pope Francis’ directive to limit the Latin Mass to a single chapel.

The Controversial Proposal

Bishop Michael T. Martin of the Diocese of Charlotte has caused a stir with a leaked document that suggests significant changes to traditional Catholic rites. These alterations include banning Mass ad orientem, kneeling during Communion, the use of altar rails, ringing of bells, and the inclusion of the Latin language during services.

The diocese described the letter as an “early draft,” which implies it might undergo further modifications before any definitive norms are released.

Implications for Traditional Practices

The proposal has provoked a sharp response from critics. Frank Wright, a commentator on the “Faith and Reason” program, initially thought the letter was satire due to its perceived hostility towards Catholic tradition. He mentioned that the removal of altar rails is seen as a directed attack on the sacredness of Holy Communion.

“The first time I looked at (the letter), I couldn’t believe that it wasn’t satire, because it wasn’t only inspired obviously by an undisguised hostility towards anything that resembles the Catholic tradition, but it also seemed to be rather absurd in some places. It would be an elaborate joke if it weren’t so gravely serious.” – Frank Wright.

The directive to replace traditional bell-ringing with verbal greetings has also been criticized as contrary to spiritual reverence. John-Henry Westen, the host of the program, described the proposed ban on bells as “bizarre.”

Supporters and Church Unity

The diocese maintains that these changes aim to promote unity in the Church. Bishop Martin announced that the restriction on the Latin Mass ties into Pope Francis’ Traditionis Custodes, a directive that limits the use of the Traditional Latin Mass in efforts to unify Church practice.

“promote the concord and unity of the Church.” – Bishop Michael Martin.

Pope Francis has championed these alterations, advocating for Church unity and expressing concerns over rejecting reforms from the Second Vatican Council. The restriction aligns with his 2021 motu proprio, outlining beliefs that the Latin Mass upset Church unity.
