During a Republican lunch meeting on Tuesday, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell experienced a fall that required medical attention.

Medical personnel were seen entering McConnell’s Capitol office with a wheelchair shortly after the 82-year-old senator, who will be succeeded by South Dakota Sen. John Thune in January, sustained his injuries.

“Leader McConnell tripped following lunch. He sustained a minor cut to the face and sprained his wrist,” a spokesperson informed Scripps News’ Nathaniel Reed.

The incident prompted several staff members to leave their posts to assist the elderly senator at the lunch event, according to The Hill.

In McConnell’s absence, Thune took charge of Tuesday’s leadership press conference, assuring reporters that the Kentucky senator was recovering well.

“He is fine. He is in his office,” Thune stated, directing additional inquiries to McConnell’s team.

Senate Republican Conference Chair John Barrasso accompanied McConnell and his medical team as they made their way back to the Capitol office.

The fall occurred after McConnell had finished speaking at the lunch, with many participants reportedly unaware of the incident.

“Saw McConnell walk from the floor to his office about 15 min ago, joined by Barrasso (who is also a doctor). Less than 5 minutes later a medical team entered the office with a wheelchair. Emergency medical team entering now,” CNN producer Morgan Rimmer wrote on Twitter.

A representative confirmed that despite the sprained wrist and facial cut, McConnell received clearance to continue his regular schedule.
