Newsom Slams Move To Remove Trump From California Ballot

California Gov. Gavin Newsom spoke against a proposal aimed at kicking former President Donald Trump off California’s presidential primary ballot.

While Newsom said that Trump is a threat to democracy, he said he did not support the move to not include his name in the ballot.

“There is no doubt that Donald Trump is a threat to our liberties and even to our democracy. But in California, we defeat candidates at the polls. Everything else is a political distraction,” he stated.

California Lt. Governor Eleni Kounalakis wrote a letter to California Secretary of State Shirley Weber, asking that Trump be removed from the ballot.

“I urge you to explore every legal option to remove former President Donald Trump from California’s 2024 presidential primary ballot. This decision is about honoring the rule of law in our country and protecting the fundamental pillars of our democracy,” she wrote.

“There will be the inevitable political punditry about a decision to remove Trump from the ballot, but this is not a matter of political gamesmanship. This is a dire matter that puts at stake the sanctity of our constitution and our democracy,” she added.

Kounalakis’ request follows the decision by the Colorado Supreme Court to remove Trump from the state’s primary ballot. The move has attracted criticism from even Trump’s presidential rivals, who insist the decision is wrong.

Trump has promised to take up the ruling to the United States Supreme Court, in hopes that it will be overturned.

In a post on Truth Social on Wednesday, Trump slammed the Department of Justice for targeting him in what he calls a political witchhunt.

“BIDEN SHOULD DROP ALL OF THESE FAKE POLITICAL INDICTMENTS AGAINST ME, BOTH CRIMINAL & CIVIL. EVERY CASE I AM FIGHTING IS THE WORK OF THE DOJ & WHITE HOUSE. NO SUCH THING HAS EVER HAPPENED IN OUR COUNTRY BEFORE. BANANA REPUBLIC??? ELECTION INTERFERENCE!!!” he wrote.
