In North Carolina’s 6th district, a disturbing situation has emerged involving an illegal immigrant detained in Davidson County Jail for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor. Similar incidents have occurred across multiple states, including Virginia, Texas, Massachusetts, and New York.

This incident highlights the challenges facing newly appointed Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Border Czar Tom Homan as they begin their mission to remove criminal illegal aliens from American communities.

The case raises alarming concerns about the system’s failures. Questions persist about how a known criminal illegal immigrant moved freely within our communities, why ICE released her after taking her from local law enforcement, and most critically, why someone on the Terror Watch List was allowed to go free.

The previous administration’s policies led to this crisis, with the Biden team prioritizing their agenda over public safety. Their approach included transporting illegal aliens across the country rather than immediate deportation. This issue significantly influenced the American electorate, resulting in Donald Trump’s decisive victory in November 2024.

As a congressional representative, I’m committed to fulfilling the voters’ mandate for safer communities that reflect local values and pride.

The case centers on Mercedesa Paun, who entered the U.S. through San Diego in 2022. Despite appearing on the terror watch list, she was released twice after ICE detentions. Her case exemplifies a broader crisis: under Biden’s administration, over eight million migrants were released nationwide, including 1.7 million “gotaways” who evaded Border Patrol.

Under Noem and Homan’s leadership, law enforcement now has renewed support to fully execute their duties within legal boundaries.

Paun’s criminal activities spanned multiple states, including a grand larceny arrest in Minnesota before moving to North Carolina. In November 2024, she faced another grand larceny charge in North Carolina. Though local authorities properly notified ICE, who took custody, she was released after just two days.

As a father of two daughters, this situation is particularly concerning. While my district voted for change, the previous administration’s policies continued to endanger our communities.

The Trump administration will ensure Paun’s deportation, but the damage to innocent lives remains irreversible. The Democratic leadership’s failures in maintaining law and order are now being addressed through congressional action to formalize President Trump’s immigration executive order.

Since taking office in January 2025, alongside President Trump’s second term, significant progress has been made. Within two weeks, Trump secured agreements with Mexico and Canada to enhance border security measures against illegal immigration and fentanyl trafficking.

My early congressional actions included supporting the Laken Riley Act, signed into law on January 29, marking the first step in addressing the border crisis inherited from the previous administration.

We’re entering a new phase prioritizing American safety over global interests and criminal accommodation. Understanding past failures is crucial to prevent similar incidents.

The message to Secretary Noem and Border Czar Homan is clear: Mercedesa Paun must be deported.
