Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has initiated steps to formally rename the “Gulf of Mexico” to the “Gulf of America,” following former President Trump’s endorsement of the name change.

During a morning press conference, Trump expressed his approval for the proposed name change, describing it as “appropriate” and praising its appeal. “What a beautiful name,” he remarked. “Has a beautiful ring [to it].”

Historical records indicate that the Gulf’s name originated from the North American city of Mexico. The body of water has carried various names throughout history, with one particular map from 1630 referring to it as the “Gulf of New Spain.”

Inspired by Trump’s endorsement, Greene promptly instructed her legislative staff to begin drafting the necessary legislation. According to sources close to the development of the bill, the initiative has already garnered significant support, with multiple lawmakers expressing interest in co-sponsoring the legislation.

In a conversation with Benny Johnson, Greene shared her enthusiasm about the project. “I was so fired up watching the press conference today when President Trump said that he’s going to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America that I directed my leg staff to immediately draft legislation, and we are entering it right now, to officially change the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America,” she said.

The congresswoman elaborated on the necessity of congressional involvement in the process, citing the extensive administrative requirements. “Congress has to do this because we have to fund the name change in maps,” she explained. “We have to fund the name change through all types of you know, like the military, FAA, etc.”

Greene expressed confidence in the initiative’s success, drawing parallels with routine congressional actions. “It’s absolutely the right thing to do we change post office names all the time up here. You better bet we are absolutely going to change the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Let’s go!” she declared.
