On Wednesday morning, activists from the British direct action group Just Stop Oil made a bold statement by spraying bright orange paint across the facade of the U.S. embassy in London. This act of protest was carried out in response to the recent U.S. Presidential election results.

The campaign group released a statement asserting that the true victors of the election were “Corporate power” and “the fossil fuel industry,” which they claim control the major political parties. The activists targeted the limestone wall of the embassy, covering it with vibrant orange paint as a form of rejection against what they termed “fascism.”

Just Stop Oil criticized President-elect Trump, labeling him a “populist” who appeals to widespread disaffection but fails to address what they consider the most crucial issue: ending oil and gas drilling. The group called for public involvement, urging ordinary citizens to organize and initiate change, stating, “Just Stop Oil.”

One of the detained activists, 25-year-old Joseph Aggarwal, expressed a populist viewpoint. He argued that Western democracies offer voters parties with minimal differences, resulting in deteriorating living conditions, ongoing injustice, and climate collapse. Aggarwal suggested this lack of genuine democracy fosters resentment and allows figures like Trump to exploit public discontent for the benefit of the wealthy elite.

The protest came in the wake of Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election, where he secured the support of over 70 million American voters. Just Stop Oil’s action highlights the growing concerns and divisions surrounding political leadership and environmental policies in the face of global challenges.
