Federal Judge Fatally Hit By Car Outside Nevada Federal Courthouse

U.S. District Court Judge Larry Hicks, who was appointed by former President George W. Bush, was involved in a fatal crash close to the federal courthouse in Reno, Nevada, on Wednesday.

According to the Reno Police Department and the Washoe Sheriff’s Department, Hicks was hit by a car outside the courthouse at about 2:15 p.m. that day as he was crossing the street. He was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, however, he succumbed to his injuries.

“Today’s news regarding the Honorable Judge Larry R. Hicks who served Nevada for over 53 years is tragic,” Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam announced on X.

Authorities stated that the driver involved in the incident stayed on the scene of the crash and is cooperating with investigators. According to police, the driver did not appear to be impaired at the time of the crash.

“Today’s news regarding the Honorable Judge Larry R. Hicks who served Nevada for over 53 years is tragic,” Washoe County, Nevada, Sheriff Darin Balaam stated, adding, “Despite his notable accomplishments, Judge Hicks once stated, ‘My greatest thrill in life is my family.’ His life philosophy was based on a balance of family, work, and self.”

“Larry Hicks was a one of a kind man, revered in our community and, most importantly, beloved by his family. On behalf of my family and the men and women of the Sheriff’s Office, we extend our deepest condolences to Larry’s son Chris, the current District Attorney, and all of Larry’s family. Judge Hicks’ legacy will forever be noted in Washoe County,” Balaam continued.

Hicks, who began his legal career as a prosecutor in 1968, was appointed a judge by Bush back in 2001 after he worked in a private law practice from 1979. Before he took up a private practice, he served as the Washoe County district attorney from 1974 to 1978.

After over a decade as a judge, he took up a senior status as a district court judge in 2013.
