The attorneys, including Bakari Sellers, held a press conference to request a detailed probe into the shooter’s motives and how the weapon was acquired. They expressed gratitude while emphasizing the necessity of understanding the circumstances that led to the fatal event. This call for transparency aims to prevent similar incidents in the future, while allowing the family to find some measure of peace.

A Community Mourning

Florida State University President Richard McCullough addressed the tragedy, sharing the university’s grief and commitment to cooperating fully with law enforcement during the investigation. McCullough assured the affected families that FSU would work tirelessly to help unveil the facts of the matter. The shooter, identified as Phoenix Ikner, is currently hospitalized and awaiting formal charges. The weapon used, a former service firearm belonging to Ikner’s stepmother, has raised questions about security and gun control on campus.

“I and everyone else at Florida State share the family’s grief. We share their anger. We share their desire for answers. I can assure you Florida State University is fully cooperating with law enforcement, and we too look forward to the day when all the facts are known.” – Richard McCullough.

In addition to Chabba, Robert Morales, who was also a father and food service employee, perished during the incident. Six others were injured but are expected to recover. The community and victim families are united in their quest for accountability as they assess how such a tragedy unfolded.

Waiting for Answers

The families affected by the FSU shooting are left with lingering questions, fueled by limited communication with law enforcement due to the ongoing nature of the investigation. Chabba’s family, in particular, is pushing for prompt and sincere communication from authorities to allow them to heal. “Losing a father, having children, and you can’t explain why. When your dad goes on a work trip, they’re supposed to come home,” said Bakari Sellers, pointing to the deep yearning for answers that the affected families feel.

“The reason we’re here today is because the Chabba family just wants individuals to know their heartfelt sense of gratitude, but also we’re asking for a thorough and transparent investigation. We believe that that’s necessary for healing.” – Bakari Sellers.

The need for certainty about the sequence of events continues to be a priority for the grieving families. Amidst the uncertainty, FSU and local authorities remain pledged to provide vital information as it becomes available, ensuring the investigation is carried out with the urgency and transparency requested.
