The head of the FBI’s New York division was removed from his position on Monday, with no explanation provided for the sudden departure.

In a letter to his staff at the New York Field Office, James Dennehy, who began his FBI career following the September 11 terrorist attacks after serving in the US Marine Corps, disclosed that he was instructed to submit his retirement paperwork immediately.

“Late Friday, I was informed that I needed to put my retirement papers in today, which I just did. I was not given a reason for this decision,” Dennehy wrote in the communication, which was later obtained by ABC News and other media outlets.

The unexpected nature of his departure prompted Dennehy to express regret to his team. In his farewell message, he praised his colleagues, describing them as “an office of professionals who will always do the right thing for the right reasons.”

His removal continues a pattern of high-level departures from the bureau during the Trump administration’s tenure.

The announcement follows a recent clash between Dennehy and acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove. Just last month, Dennehy sent a resolute email to his staff, encouraging them to stand firm after several officials involved in the January 6 Capitol riot investigation were removed from their positions.
