AOC Slams Biden’s Border Wall Move

President Joe Biden’s administration’s decision to waive numerous federal laws to kickstart the construction of a southern border wall has drawn sharp criticism from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), who released a released a statement voicing her disapproval.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas recently announced the waiver of 26 federal laws to facilitate the construction of a border wall in the Rio Grande Valley Sector. This decision comes in response to the alarming surge in illegal entries by migrants in recent months, with over 245,000 encounters reported this fiscal year alone.

In her statement, Ocasio-Cortez urged Biden to take responsibility for this decision and “reverse course.” She argues that a border wall does little to deter migrants fleeing poverty and violence but instead pushes them into more remote and dangerous areas. According to her, this is “a cruel policy” that doesn’t address the root causes of migration.

The congresswoman calls for a more thoughtful approach, suggesting that the Biden administration should “invest in meaningful immigration reform” and address the underlying issues driving people to seek refuge in the United States.

Ocasio-Cortez’s stance on the border crisis aligns with the majority of Democrats, including Biden himself, who halted border wall construction shortly after taking office in 2021. Hence, the administration’s new decision has caused confusion within the Democratic Party and sparked pushback from some members of the party.

During his 2020 presidential campaign, Biden vehemently criticized former President Donald Trump for his border security policies, as he promised that the border wall would not be furthered during his administration.

At the time, he called the border wall a “misplaced priority” that failed to “manage migration in a safe, orderly and humane way.”

After his change in border policy, Biden attempted to explain that he had tried to redirect the already appropriated funds for border wall construction but encountered obstacles.”And in the meantime, there’s nothing under the law other than they have to use the money for what it was appropriated. I can’t stop that,” he claimed.

This reversal in border policy has not only sparked criticism within the Democratic Party but also invited mockery from Republicans, including Trump who took to social media, writing, “So interesting to watch Crooked Joe Biden break every environmental law in the book to prove that I was right when I built 560 miles (they incorrectly state 450 in story!) of brand new, beautiful border wall.”

“Will Joe Biden apologize to me and America for taking so long to get moving, and allowing our country to be flooded with 15 million illegals immigrants, from places unknown. I will await his apology!” the former president wrote further.
