Mexican Drug Cartels Adjusting Operation For Biden, Lawmaker Says

With the 2024 presidential election about 10 months ahead, Mexican drug cartels are slowing down their human smuggling operations, according to Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX).

Gonzales said this week during an interview with Newsweek that the adjustment by the cartels is in order to aid President Joe Biden’s reelection bid.

“When you say border crossings are down, you’re talking about January being the most encounters ever. So, was it as bad as December? No, because that was [an] all-time, but it still was the worst January ever. So, that’s not good. It’s not good,” he stated.

Going further to posit that “the cartels are trying to carry the Biden administration a couple rounds,” he added, “Mexico has an election in June that no one’s really tracking. And, I suspect, for the next couple of months, everything will be cleaned up a little bit. I mean, over 7,000 people a day is still astronomical.”

Illegal border crossings at the U.S.-Mexico border came down by 50% in January after months of consecutive record-breaking numbers.

Falling to 128,410 from up to 302,000 in December, the reduction in border crossings has been touted as a major win by the Biden administration even though it still makes the highest border crossings ever recorded by a government in January, according to Gonzales.

National Border Patrol Council President Brandon Judd shared some insights into how Mexican drug cartels adjust their operations to blend with U.S. politics. When asked if there would be another surge of illegal migrants crossing the border in masses, he said that is expected.

“We saw this back when President Trump was up for re-election again, we saw a huge surge expecting that Biden was going to win, they wanted to get here before Biden took office knowing that he was going to put policies in place that were going to protect them,’ he stated, adding, “We see the cartels, they are very intelligent in everything that they do. They know what the ebbs and flows of our politics are. They know how to generate money based on what our politics are. They also understand what the media is reporting.”
