Zelensky Says Communist China Is Blocking Peace Process with Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is accusing China of helping Russia carry out a plan to disrupt a planned Swiss-organized peace conference on the war in Ukraine.

Zelensky made the claims during an address at Asia’s premier security conference, claiming that China is trying to get other countries and their leaders to not attend the upcoming talks.

“Russia, using Chinese influence in the region, using Chinese diplomats also, does everything to disrupt the peace summit. Regrettably this is unfortunate that such a big independent powerful country as China is an instrument in the hands of (Russian leader Vladimir) Putin,” he said.

Condemning China’s pressure on other countries and leaders, Zelensky stated, “That is not only support to Russia, that is basically support of war.”

While Switzerland had hoped China, which had called for a peace conference with equal participation of all sides in the Ukraine-Russia war, would attend the peace conference scheduled for the middle of this month, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning revealed on Friday that an attendance was unlikely.

“There is still a clear gap between the arrangements for the meeting and the demands of the Chinese side, as well as the general expectations of the international community. This makes it difficult for China to participate in the meeting,” Mao said.

Before that particular address in which he accused China of helping Russia to disrupt the upcoming peace conference, Zelensky expressed disappointment at some countries’ refusal to commit to joining the event.

“The same goes for the countries in the region. We truly count on you supporting this summit, and that you will be present in Switzerland,” he stated.

Urging leaders and top defense officials to attend the event, he maintained that Russia will be more likely to listen and come to an agreement with Ukraine if participation at the event is massive.

According to him, Ukraine is “ready to hear various proposals and thoughts that lead us … to an end of the war and a sustainable and just peace.”

The upcoming peace conference in Switzerland comes after Ukraine rejected a ceasefire proposal with Russia at a peace summit in the Swiss nation in January.
